Everything You Need to Know About Botox Dry Eyes and Migraine Treatment

Botox has been famously used for reducing facial wrinkles for decades now and has also been proven effective for temporary treatment for eye issues such as droopy eyelid and strabismus. The botulinum toxin injection is also widely used for treating a host of other diseases as well, such as migraine headaches and excessive sweating. But recent studies have shown that Botox cosmetic can also be used as a treatment for dry eye symptoms and photophobia, or light sensitivity.

So what do you need to know about Botox dry eyes treatment? Experts have discovered that the neurotoxin can be used as an unconventional and relatively non-invasive solution for patients suffering from lacrimal gland mediated tear disorders. Aside from treating strabismus and essential benign blepharospasm, doctors can now consider Botox to address epiphora and dry eye syndrome.

How Botox Injection Works

Botulinum toxin is a synthetic chemical that is injected into the treatment area to block nerve signals to prevent the muscles from contracting. Botox is famous for its cosmetic use, specifically for smoothing out fine lines and dynamic wrinkles. This makes Botox a standard anti-aging treatment and has become accessible even for those who are not rich and famous.

Depending on the treatment area involved, a Botox patient may need from 1 to 10 injections during a single session to block the nerve signals successfully. The full effects are seen during the first week or two after the injection and can last up to 3 to 6 months. Follow-up injections are needed for those who want to maintain the effects of the Botox injections.

How Botox Dry Eyes Treatment is Possible

Doctors have discovered that Botox can address dry eye disease (which is a major cause of ocular surface disease) and photophobia in patients with migraine headaches. They found out that the three conditions were correlated and the symptoms improved after getting Botox injections. Dry eye and migraine were originally thought of as 2 different conditions and should be treated independently. But the experts’ findings suggest that the symptoms are linked and represent different manifestations of a single underlying disease.

This points to using Botox to treat light sensitivity. A study gave 91 patients who are suffering from migraines Botox injections and their light sensitivity was monitored. Around 80% of them reported their photophobia as severe prior to the onset of the headaches. After getting Botox, 70% of them reported an improvement in their symptoms. Around 45% of them reported having severe dry eye symptoms during their migraines and around 30% reported improvement in their condition after getting the Botox treatment.

How Botox is Effective for Migraine Treatment

Since the dry eyes, in this case, are related to migraines, it’s also important to understand how Botox works as a migraine treatment. The injections are made into several specific muscle areas around the head and neck to prevent the onset of migraines. These treatment areas include the forehead, bridge of the nose, the temples, the neck, the back of the head. Injections are also made just above the shoulder blades in the upper back.

Botox works for these headaches because it blocks the chemicals called neurotransmitters, which carry pain signals from your brain. Botox acts as a roadblock in that pathway and stops the chemicals in their tracks before they reach the nerve endings around the head and neck.

Each treatment typically involves getting around 31 injections across these treatment sites. It sounds a lot, but you have to keep in mind that migraines involve lots of muscles for them to trigger. In adults, Botox can prevent chronic migraine headaches that happen 15 or more days per month, with each headache lasting at least 4 hours. However, Botox is not recommended for episodic migraines, which involve 14 or fewer headache days per month. It’s also not recommended for treating common tension headaches.

If you’re suffering from migraine headaches and considering getting Botox injections for pain relief, make sure that you get a doctor who has experience in doing these injections for migraines and not just merely for wrinkles and cosmetic uses. Patients who have turned to Botox for migraine treatment report lesser headache days, around half than the usual per month. After 5 rounds of treatment, patients report that their headaches lessened about 70%.

So this is why patients who get Botox injections for migraines can experience a secondary benefit, which is the relief of their symptoms of photophobia and dry eye. Experts cite that migraines, dry eye, and photophobia are sharing neural pathways that link their responses to certain neural triggers. As the Botox treatments decrease the amount of migraine that the patients have, it can be safely assumed that it also has an effect on decreasing the severity of the inflammatory pathways related to dry eye and light sensitivity.

Maintenance for Botox Dry Eyes and Migraine Treatment

Botox for dry eyes

The effect of Botox injections is not permanent and those who want to maintain their migraine treatment may need to take medications on top of getting Botox. After several months following the injections, your nerves will sprout new pain fibers and thus allowing the headaches to return. Botox injections can be repeated no sooner than every three months, so for the last two weeks of the Botox cycle, your doctor may recommend other headache treatments, such as medications.

These medications may include cardiovascular drugs, such as beta-blockers and calcium channel blockers. Your doctor can also recommend anti-depressants and anti-seizure medications.

It's important to note that dry eye symptoms can be a side effect of getting Botox injections that are not related to migraines. In this case, there are several methods used to alleviate a temporary dry eye or evaporative dry eye, which feels similar to a chronic dry eye condition. Your doctor may recommend using artificial tears, eye drops, or punctal plugs to bring moisture to your upper and lower eyelid.

For other dry eye conditions - issues that may involve blurred vision, meibomian gland dysfunction, or diabetic retinopathy, you will need a specialist eye doctor for dry eye treatment.

Again, it’s crucial to point out that Botox, whether it’s for migraines and other purposes, should be given only under a doctor’s care in order to avoid an allergic reaction, complications, and adverse reactions. In your case, it should be a doctor who has extensive experience in giving Botox to migraine patients. Everything You Need to Know About Botox for Sinking Lips for Men

Deflating lips or sinking lips is just one of the inevitable changes that we will encounter due to aging. This makes it one of the most requested procedures for Botox treatment, not just for women but for men as well. Women may make up the majority of Botox patients, but men are slowly catching up as well when it comes to maintaining a youthful appearance. They do age too, and now that they are discovering that their lips and other parts of the face are becoming less firm, they want to seek the wonders of Botox in restoring their youth and vitality.

So what do you need to know about Botox for sinking lips for men, as well as what Botox can do generally for a man's appearance? Botox can help make aging lips look fuller with the help of procedures such as the lip flip, which is designed to enhance the upper lip. As Botox and other injectables are getting more popular among men, they can now explore their options and try lip flips to address deflating lip problems.

Why More Men Are Choosing to Get Botox Injections

Botox and other cosmetic procedures are usually associated with women, who are considered more vain in terms of keeping physical upkeep. Only male models and celebrities can be obligated to seek the services of a dermatologist and plastic surgeon. But the impact of social media has made even men more conscious about their looks and they are now noticing the fine lines, creases, and volume loss that goes with aging and an unhealthy lifestyle. They too are feeling the pressure of having their physical flaws highlighted for the world to see online.

Aside from social media, men also consider workplace competitiveness and wanting to look good for their partners as the main factors in getting cosmetic work done on their faces and bodies. With younger employees taking over the workspace, men feel that maintaining a youthful appearance, sans the dynamic wrinkles, double chin, frown lines, and nasolabial fold retains their edge over the newer blood. The same competitiveness is applied when it comes to looking good for their partners. With women becoming as competitive as men in the dating scene, men now find themselves working on their market value by keeping themselves looking good.

Why Men Need to Use More Botox Than Women

The effectiveness of Botox is different between men and women. Because men generally have greater muscle mass than women, they will require more Botox to fix aging problems that women also have. A man's skull is about 20 percent larger than a woman's and he also has more facial muscle mass, subcutaneous tissue, and blood vessel density. Also, male patients have higher and wider foreheads, more prominent chins and jawline, and flatter eyebrow contours.

Since Botox is priced by the unit, it can be more expensive for men to get the results that they want. Under-dosing botulinum toxin injections are not going to cut it since it will only leave men unsatisfied with the results of the treatment. This is especially true when addressing facial lines and wrinkles produced by facial expressions, which is the main domain of Botox.

Since men have larger facial expressions, they tend to develop deeper and more severe wrinkles in all areas of the face. Men also have lower levels of subcutaneous fat compared with women, which also contributes to the disparity.

Fixing Lip Problems in Men Using Botox

Dermal filler is the usual go-to when it comes to fixing common lip problems since fillers are designed to add more volume to the lips. But not all those who have thin or sinking lips would necessarily want to have thicker lips and this is where Botox cosmetic can help. There's a procedure called the lip flip, in which the lip enhancement is more subtle compared to fillers. This is perfect for those who want to enhance the shape of their upper lip with minimal effort.

Botox lip flip involves putting a few injections on the upper lip line to help it relax and roll slightly upward. This gives the lip its slight lift and makes it more visible. The series of injections are made into the orbicularis oris muscle, which encircles the mouth. Botox makes the upper lip roll slightly upward, which makes it look more defined and voluminous. The same injectable treatment can also smooth the vertical lines around the lips.

Lip flips are not just for fuller lips though. Botox can also fix a gummy smile, which is when too much gum tissue is visible above the top teeth. By injecting Botox into the double curve in the top lip, also known as Cupid's Bow, the obicularis oris muscle is relaxed and allows more of the lips to become more visible while concealing some of the gums.

It will take at least a few days after the injections to see the changes and should be in full effect after a week. The Botox will hold up around 3 to 4 months.

Botox Lip Flip VS Lip Fillers

Closeup of a young unshaven man and his lips

A Botox lip flip is not considered as a direct substitute for a lip filler since the overall results are different. Your doctor will determine if you are more suited for a lip flip or a filler depending on your natural lip anatomy, your personal preferences, and your desired outcome.

You're a prime candidate for a Botox lip flip if you feel that your upper lip looks invisible when you smile and what you want is a subtle but definitely noticeable "pout". You want fuller-looking lips without the additional volume. Lip flip is also more appropriate for you if you prefer something more temporary since the Botox will only last around 3 to 4 months.

Now if you want the opposite - additional volume in both upper and lower lips and improvement in overall lip shape and symmetry, then you're better off with getting lip fillers such as Restylane. This is also for you if you wish to address severe vertical lip lines and you prefer a longer-lasting treatment - injectable filler can last around 6 to 12 months.

Your doctor may recommend combining Botox with hyaluronic acid fillers if you want to enhance lip volume AND lift the upper lip slightly. This is usually advised for patients with very thin lips.

How to Get Natural-looking Results For Your Lip Flip

Whether you're a man or a woman, lips that look as natural as possible are what you need. Injecting Botox on the lips may sound like a very simple procedure, but the results can get messed up if you get it from someone who is not qualified to perform a lip flip.

Not everyone who can inject Botox can execute a perfect lip flip. Achieving the right effect takes a high level of skill and knowledge, thus the importance of getting the right lip injection doctor for this. Make sure that you get someone who already has extensive experience in doing lip flips and not just Botox or facial filler injections.

What to Expect After Getting a Lip Flip

The side effects, which are all minor and temporary, are basically the same as those that you will experience in any other Botox-ed areas. Common ones include bruising, swelling, and numbness around the injection site. You may also feel some nausea, headaches, and fever. These should all go away within or after 24 hours.

How Men Should Choose Their Botox Treatments

The industry is now marketing Botox to appeal to men and make them feel more at ease by making themselves look good cosmetically. Doctors want men to understand that concerns regarding collagen, facial wrinkles, thinning lips, smile lines, and acne scars apply to both sexes.

Thus the term "Brotox" is born, designed to make men feel more comfortable seeking cosmetic procedure such as Botox lip injections. But unlike women (who require smaller doses of Botox than men) who can avail of Botox treatments in smaller clinics and even nail salons, men are advised to go to nothing less than a board-certified doctor or a dermatologist.

It's important too that men seek out doctors who have experience in doing Botox injections on men - they will know the exact placement of injections and amounts of Botox needed to do the job. You don't want to look like a wax dummy, which is what you will look like if you don't go to a proper doctor.

Getting lip Botox for men needs doctors who have specialized skills, as Botox procedures and results are different between men and women. If you're in New Jersey and other nearby areas, Ethos Spa is the facility to trust. The clinic gives only the safest and most effective skin and medical spa solutions. Dysport or Botox: Which Cosmetic Treatment Works Best for Upper Lip Lines?

There’s no questioning the immense popularity of Dysport and Botox injectables for cosmetic treatment. From correcting facial wrinkles and treating crow’s feet and forehead lines to lip enhancement, the use of botulinum toxin type injection has helped many rejuvenate their appearances and achieve their best look.

But between Dysport and Botox, which works better as a lip augmentation treatment for upper lip wrinkles? Both injections are effective as cosmetic injections, but because of differences in their formulations, Botox is more used for lip lines and wrinkles than Dysport. Botox injections are less diluted than Dysport which means they can stay longer when injected in the lip area.

Dysport vs. Botox for Upper Lip Lines

Botox and Dysport are both neurotoxin injections that are derived from the same Clostridium botulinum bacteria. They’re neuromodulators that block the release of acetylcholine, which is a neurotransmitter that stimulates facial muscle contractions. Too much movement of the muscles from facial expressions can cause deep smile lines and forehead creases to form on the skin.

When injected into the desired treatment area, Botox and Dysport disrupt the nerves from sending signals to the muscles which in turn helps them relax, reducing dynamic wrinkles and softening the lines on the face. They can also correct issues surrounding the lip area such as nasolabial folds, marionette lines, and vertical lip lines.

Comparing Botox and Dysport as an Anti-Wrinkle Treatment

Many dermatologists suggest the use of Botox and Dysport for anti-wrinkle treatments. But even though they come from the same botulinum toxin family, there are certain differences in their formulation that can affect how they’re administered on a patient and their intended effect. To help you decide which Botox-type injectable to get, we’ve prepared a brief explanation of their distinct qualities:

1. Formula characteristics

Dysport has a more diluted concentration compared to Botox. They also have smaller protein molecules which means that more units of Dysport injection may be needed to achieve the optimal results when treating the same area. Having smaller molecules in Dysport is more advantageous in treating larger areas since they can diffuse faster upon injection.

Meanwhile, Botox has the largest molecular weight compared to other neurotoxin types, which makes them more precise and effective in targeting smaller areas such as around the eyes and in the upper lip. Botox also tends to stay near the injection site when administered, whereas Dysport can quickly migrate to other areas.

2. Average amount used for injections

A vial of Botox cosmetic can contain 50 to 100 units of the botulinum toxin, while a vial of Dysport can contain 300 to 500 units of the substance. Also, since Botox has greater molecular sizes than Dysport, it can mean that they have stronger muscle relaxing properties.

It can take multiple units of Dysport to match the effectiveness of one unit of Botox as a muscle relaxant. The injections should be carefully performed by a trained injector to make sure you’re getting the right amount of dosage for your cosmetic problem.

3. Types of facial wrinkles

Dysport is ideally used for frown lines. These are the vertical wrinkles that are prominent on the forehead and between the eyebrows. It’s also helpful in minimizing horizontal forehead lines.

Meanwhile, Botox often treats crow’s feet or the wrinkles that show on the corner of the eyes. Botox is also the preferred lip augmentation method since lip lines need precise and targeted injections in a small area. And compared to Dysport, Botox won’t migrate to other parts and will stay put in the treated site.

The exact term for using Botox for lip enhancement is Botox lip flip. It’s different from a dermal filler which is another type of injectable that uses hyaluronic acid-based substances to fill in the skin. Injectable fillers add lip volume, whereas Botox lip flip injections relax the muscles so they’ll naturally turn upward to create the illusion of a plump and fuller lip.

4. Safety of treatment

Both treatments are safe as long as they’re performed by a skilled provider. The procedures for Botox and Dysport can be done in a clinic and are usually done in about 15 minutes. They have quick recovery time meaning patients can return to their normal activities after the treatment.

Post-injection side effects may be felt in the injection site and these can include swelling, minor pain, bruising, redness, and temporary itching. Most reactions usually go away on their own after a few days.

5. Cost

The cost of the treatment varies on how many units of injection you’ll need for a treatment area. On average, the unit of Dysport may be priced at $4 to $8 while a Botox unit costs between $10 to $25. One Dysport session may be priced at $450, while an average price of a Botox treatment costs $550. Other factors can also affect the price of the treatment such as the level of experience of the injector and the geographic location of the clinic.

How Do They Differ in Results?

Your dermatologist will choose the appropriate treatment depending on your desired cosmetic goal. Botox and Dysport treat almost the same problems but another difference that they have is the time it takes for the results to be visible.

If you want to see immediate results on your facial and lip issues, Dysport may be the treatment that you need. With Dysport injection, you may start to notice improvements within 24 to 48 hours after the procedure, while Botox may take at least a week for the injection to kick in.

If you want longer-lasting results, Botox injections usually last up to 6 months, while the effects of Dysport can only take up to 4 months. To keep the desired results, you can consult with your provider about follow-up sessions so the skin will maintain its smooth and wrinkle-free look.

Tips to Make the Effects of Lip Injections Last Longer

Most lip filler injections and lip flip treatments are only temporary fixes to facial problems. Over time, they’ll lose their effects and some of the wrinkles and fine lines will only reappear. However, you can prolong their results by taking extra care of your skin.

  • Stay hydrated — Water promotes skin moisturization and prevents dry chapped lips. If you used hyaluronic acid filler, the water could enhance the effect of the injections.
  • Make lifestyle changes — Smoking cigarettes is the main cause of vertical lip lines or smoker's lines. It leads to loss of collagen which deepens wrinkles surrounding the lips. You can also regulate your physical activities since too much exercise can increase blood flow and make the results of the filler and injections wear off faster.
  • Practice good skincare — Invest in proper beauty products and start following a good skincare routine to keep your face moisturized and fresh. Choose cleansing and serum products with plenty of hyaluronic acids and collagen boosters that can minimize the effects of aging. You can also keep a handy lip plumper so you can moisturize the lips on the go.
  • Limit sun exposure — The UV rays from the sun can break down collagen faster and aid in the appearance of aging spots, wrinkles, and lines on the skin. Use sunscreen products whenever you’re going outside to protect the face from sun damage.
  • Be mindful of what you eat — Having a healthy and nutrient-rich diet can also promote good-looking skin and complement the effects of Botox and Dysport. It’s recommended to take foods that are rich in zinc and Vitamins A, C, and E since they’re essential in repairing the skin.

What Happens When You Stop Doing Botox Lip Injections?

One of the popular lip augmentation trends these days is the Botox lip flip. It’s an injectable that has quickly gained a reputation for being a safe and quick cosmetic treatment that provides a fuller lip. Moreover, a Botox treatment can improve the effects of aging in the lip area so it’s no wonder why more women are signing up for this cosmetic procedure.

But what can happen when you suddenly decide to quit Botox treatments? Botox lip injections work by relaxing the muscles in the upper lip area so they’ll curl upward to achieve a plump look. When the treatment is stopped, the effects of Botox fade away and the muscles return to their normal state which can lose your pout and cause lip wrinkles and fine lines to slowly reappear.

What to Expect When Botox Injections Wear Off

Botox has a wide range of uses for aesthetic and therapeutic purposes. Medically, doctors administer Botox to treat conditions like cervical dystonia, hyperhidrosis (excessive sweating), migraines, and droopy eyelid. As a cosmetic procedure, Botox is used by a plastic surgeon as an anti-wrinkle injection to lessen frown lines and dynamic wrinkles that show in the face and lip area.

The botulinum toxin injection is given intramuscularly which means it’s delivered deep into the muscles of the targeted treatment area. During a lip flip, a trained Botox provider will skillfully inject the toxin to the orbicularis oris muscle (the muscle that surrounds the mouth) just above the upper lip area. In turn, the muscles will temporarily relax and cause the lip to roll upwards to create an illusion of having defined and plump-looking lips.

However, a Botox injection isn’t a permanent cosmetic solution. At most, the results of the Botox treatment can last for 2 to 3 months after which the toxin will gradually lose its effects. Minor swelling and bruising in the injection site are normal as a patient waits to see the results of the Botox procedure.

Since it’s a low-risk procedure, many women get follow-up treatments to maintain the results of Botox. But for reasons that make you decide to quit getting the injections, the appearance of the skin and lips will just revert to their normal state.

After getting your last Botox lip injection, you’ll notice that the paralyzing effect will naturally wear off and the facial muscles will once again receive nerve signals that instruct them to contract. As the movement of the muscles returns, facial wrinkles and lines will begin reappearing. Loss of volume in the lips is also natural as the effects of Botox wear off.

Will Lip Wrinkles Get Worse After Botox?

woman receiving botox lip injection

It’s safe to say that Botox cosmetic injections won’t form new lines or creases in the face. While wrinkles will slowly re-emerge after you quit the injections, they won’t look any worse as they did before you got the treatment. As the toxin loses its hold on the muscles, the texture of the skin will lose its smoothness and appear uneven and shriveled in some parts of the face.

Another cause of concern is that stopping Botox will speed up the natural aging process. Depending on how long you received the treatment, you can still enjoy the wrinkle-free benefits of Botox for some time after quitting the injections. The appearance of deeper and more prominent creases after Botox can be attributed to the loss of collagen in the skin as an effect of natural aging.

What Can Cause Botox Effects to Wear off Faster?

Patients are generally advised to follow aftercare measures to achieve optimal results after Botox. Even if the procedure comes with no downtime, certain factors can affect how long Botox can stay effective on a person and cause them to wear off faster. This can include:

  • Activeness — The level of physical activity a person does can influence how fast Botox effects wear off. People with a fast metabolism can heal and absorb the proteins faster, shortening the time that you can enjoy the benefits of the injection.
  • Treatment area Certain muscles are stronger and need more Botox units to be effective. Injecting Botox for forehead wrinkles may last longer than lip injections since they require greater amounts of Botox to take effect. Treating forehead wrinkles will need an average of 20 Botox units, while Botox lip flip will require 10 units or less.
  • Facial movements — Repeated or exaggerated facial movements can cause contraction of the muscles and greatly reduce the effects of Botox.
  • Sun exposure — Getting exposed to heat and high temperature can increase circulation in the blood vessel and allow the Botox to spread out faster. It can also promote bruising in the injected area if exposed to the sun right after the procedure.
  • Skincare treatments — Facial scrubs and massages can lessen the effectiveness of the cosmetic injection. Likewise, touching the face can cause the toxin to spread and lose its desired effect on the treatment area.

Alternatives to Keep Your Lips Plump

People who stop Botox treatments may need time to adjust as the lips once again appear thin and lines start reappearing. In case you want to maintain the plumpness of your lip without Botox, other cosmetic injectable options can restore volume and achieve healthy-looking lips such as:

Dermal Filler

A lip filler treatment is another popular method for lip augmentation. It uses a gel-like substance that contains hyaluronic acid. Filler injectables are considered safe since hyaluronic acid is a natural substance that already exists in the body and functions to keep the skin moisturized.

Unlike Botox that only relaxes the muscles to appear plump, facial fillers add volume and affect the shape and structure of the treated area. This injectable filler is inserted directly into the lips and around the mouth. Most dermal filler injections can last for 6 months. Juvéderm, Restylane, and Belotero Balance are the most common types of HA filler in the market today.

Lip Implants

An implant is a structure that adds fullness to the lips using either silicone or biodegradable substances obtained via tissue grafts (skin from the abdomen is transferred to the lips) or fat grafts (fat abdomen is used for the lips). Compared to a filler injection, lip implants are a permanent filler option for patients who want long-term results.

To apply the injectable treatment, the doctor will create an incision on the corners of the mouth. A clamp will then be placed into the site to have a tunnel where the implants will be lodged and pushed to fill the lips. The procedure can be done in about 30 minutes and recovery time can take 1 to 3 days with minimal side effects.

Lip Threading

Lip threading or lip thread lift is a technique that uses dissolvable threads to smooth creases and lines that show around the mouth. The threads used are made of poly-L-lactic acid which is a substance that can encourage the production of collagen in the body, helping slow down the effects of aging.

This alternative involves making a small hole in the corner of the mouth where a cannula will be placed. The threads are inserted through the cannula just above the cupid’s bow and in effect, they’ll pull the skin upwards to improve its natural curve so you’ll have a good-looking pout.

Lip Plumper

Lip plumpers are cosmetic topical products that contain ingredients that maintain the skin’s moisturization to keep its natural volume. They may also have mild irritants like menthol, ginger, and cinnamon which can cause partial swelling and increased blood flow that results in temporary fullness of the lips. The best lip plumpers have hyaluronic acid as an active ingredient which is effective in holding water to keep your skin hydrated and looking smooth.
