How Many Units of Botox for Forehead Are Recommended?

The beauty industry is full of many "miracle wonders" that claim to reverse aging. There are creams, powders, drinks, and surgical treatments that promise to erase years off of your face, but one unbelievably effective solution is Botox. Many women and even men swear by this treatment, and one of their primary target areas is the forehead, where signs of aging are usually more prominent.

How many units can one treat the forehead with Botox? The number of Botox units used depends on the individual. It will be customized according to one's gender, the strength of facial muscles, and other factors that may influence the amount of Botox the person needs. Read on to learn more.

How Many Units of Botox Are Recommended for Forehead?

Botox injections for the forehead work to smooth horizontal lines and vertical wrinkles between the eyes. The injections work to loosen the muscles that cause these wrinkles to form. Some patients may opt for Botox injections in their foreheads. This is to lessen the presence of horizontal forehead wrinkles and vertical frown lines.

When defining how many Botox units you’ll need for your forehead, the most significant factor to consider is your gender. For females, it's normally recommended that 10 to 30 units be injected into the forehead for effective treatment, but one's age and the intensity of the wrinkles are also added factors to examine. The deeper the wrinkles, of course, the higher the number of units required. On the other hand, men need 2 to 3 more units than their female counterparts, especially in the frown lines over the nose since men's tissues tend to be more potent in this area.

Practitioners may begin with a low forehead Botox unit dosage in each injection at first. They'll give you a few weeks, normally 1 to 2, to see how that dose goes for you. You may then take a few additional units. From there, your practitioner will have a thought of how many units you need at later visits. Commonly, Botox injections are spaced roughly 3 to 4 months apart. When you first begin getting injections, treatment results may not last as long. You may decide that you need to return to your practitioner 2 to 3 months after the first treatment.

Which Other Areas of the Face Can Botox Treat?

Aside from the forehead, the common facial area that’s treated with Botox are areas with dynamic wrinkles like crow's feet (lateral canthal lines) and the frown lines, which become more pronounced when you make a facial expression. No matter which Botox provider you decide to visit, it will always be measured out in units.

Allergan, the manufacturer of Botox Cosmetic, suggests that the following units should be given:

  1. Crow's Feet (Lateral Orbital Lines) — 10 to 12 units per eye (2 eyes would mean 20 to 24 units)
  2. Frown or Glabellar Lines — 15 to 20 units
  3. Botox Brow Lift (Botox infiltration through the orbicularis oculi muscle helps lift eyebrow) — 15 to 20 units
  4. Bunny Lines (Transverse nasal) — 10 units
  5. Gummy Smile — 2.5 to 5 units
  6. Masseter Muscle — 15 to 20 units
  7. Neck — 50 to 100 units

You can get multiple injections during your visit. So if you were looking to get all three areas done, you would need 64 units. This may be less depending on the severity of the area of treatment. Remember that this is simply a guide. Your cosmetic professional is the best person to make recommendations. Be sure you always listen to their suggestions and let them know if you have questions or concerns.

Is the Use of Botox Limited to Treating Aging Face?

Woman getting her forehead injected

Apart from the Botox benefits on the patient’s face, the biological blocking powers of this treatment are helpful in treating muscular disorders, migraines, and some bowel disorders. Like Dysport injection, a non-surgical form of wrinkle treatment, Botox can treat muscle stiffness, muscle spasms (Botox interrupts the signal that the brain passes to through the nerves to stimulate muscle movement. The result is reduced muscle spasm), overactive bladder, or loss of bladder control, too. It also helps in stopping excessive sweating.

Botox vs. Dermal Filler

Botox and dermal filler are often confused, given both cosmetic treatments are injectables. The most significant difference is that Botox cosmetic treatment freezes muscles (like the forehead muscle or frontalis muscle) and prevents line formation. In contrast, filler fills lines and brings back volume to lend to a plumper, more youthful look. Botox can’t restore lost volume or fill in deep lines or wrinkles. Meanwhile, Baby Botox is a preventative Botox procedure. With this kind of treatment, little amounts of Botox are injected into various face areas, preventing forehead lines (mainly horizontal forehead lines), crows feet (wrinkle around the eyes), and glabella lines from forming.

How Long Does It Take for Botox to Work?

As a neuromodulator that relaxes muscles and keeps them from working at their total capacity, thereby reducing the wrinkles they cause, Botox usually begins to take effect anywhere from 3 to 5 days after treatment. However, it can take up to a full 14 days after treatment for the full results to become visible.

This delay is caused by how long it takes for a person’s body to begin reacting to the Botox injection. Patients who have stronger facial muscles could possibly take a little more time for the treatment to start taking effect.

Is Botox Safe?

Botox or botulinum toxin, the number 1 most popular cosmetic treatment in the United States, has been used carefully and successfully for years. It’s quick and practical, and the side effects usually are hardly noticeable and gone in a few days. Side effects are frequently bruising and swelling of the injection site. Patients may also encounter headache and flu-like symptoms and, in more severe and less common cases, temporary eyelid drooping. The best way to prevent these possible side effects is to book your Botox injections with a skilled esthetician or plastic surgeon. Botox results are most successful when done and managed by an experienced practitioner.

Before booking treatment, keep in mind that the best candidate for Botox is someone in good physical and psychological health. If you're expecting or breastfeeding a child or have specific neurologic diseases, you shouldn’t get Botox injections. Botox is also inadvisable if you’re allergic to cow's milk protein. If you have any issues about your qualification for Botox injections, talk with your dermatologist or certified injector before receiving any injections.

Is Botox Safe for Asian Eyes?

The popularity of Botox has significantly grown over the years, and that’s not surprising at all considering all the benefits that the treatment provides. It allows you to look and feel younger by giving you a smooth and glowing complexion, especially for those who want to get rid of frown lines, crow’s feet, and forehead lines. More than this, it’s a non-surgical treatment, so there isn’t any downtime after the procedure as compared to facial plastic surgery.

So is Botox on Asian eyes safe? Botox is a totally safe treatment for any ethnic group. It’s just as effective for relaxing facial muscles, and you can most definitely get Botox if you have Asian eyes.

Is It Safe to Get Botox on Asian Eyes?

Botox is known to be totally safe, and that doesn’t change for people with Asian eyes. It’s an extremely safe treatment for any ethnic group, and those with Asian eyes can totally get Botox. After all, the same complaints about aging expressed by Westerners can also be expressed by Asians. It’s important to note, however, that there could be differences in terms of factors such as face shape. Chinese people, for example, may have a more prominent jaw muscle. Nonetheless, that doesn’t change the fact that Botox is a safe treatment for them.

Another reason why a lot of Asian women and men don’t believe that Botox is for them is that they rarely get wrinkles. However, Botox isn’t just for smoothing those out — it can also be for facial contouring and slimming.

That being said, Asian men and women can also get Botox in other areas. They tend to have a more rounded face due to where fat deposits around the eyes, cheeks, and mouth. And while this prevents them from having wrinkles, it’s also what keeps them from having their desired face shape. This is why a lot of Asian men and women want a V-shaped face (which eliminates puffy cheeks, double chin, etc.). Botox and fillers can contour their faces to make that V shape possible.

Botox, or botulinum toxin, works by relaxing the jaw muscles — making the chewing muscles become thinner. The treatment blocks nerve impulses, so your cheekbones elongate, and your face becomes lifted. This creates the top part of the V shape. Take note, however, that Botox results are only temporary. The effects of facial contouring and slimming can last up to 3 to 4 months at the start of your treatments. After several treatments every 4 months, the results can last longer.

As we discuss how Botox is possible for Asians, allow us to also emphasize that Botox isn’t just for women. Young Asian men are likely to get a Botox treatment to slim their faces. So to simplify: Botox is also great for Asians — both men and women.

Is Botox Going to Be Different if I Have Asian Eyes?

You may be wondering if being an Asian patient or having Asian eyes will lead to different Botox use. Asian patients usually have distinct facial features such as smaller eyes, and while Botox or Dysport can be used under the eyes, it’s not exactly using the same technique that would be used in Western patients.

According to some studies, Botox and Dysport must be used a little bit differently in Asian patients since the Asian eyelid is naturally smaller with different anatomy of fat. This would result in a less defined crease above the eyelashes (upper lid/upper eyelid crease).

For Asian women, a slightly lower dose should be used as it offers a better result as compared to the standard dose used in Caucasians. When it comes to the position of the Botox injection, it should also be different in Asians so they could achieve a more natural look.

Asian Skin and Face vs. Caucasian Skin and Face

Attractive asian woman

When we give a cosmetic procedure to patients from a diverse population, whether it’s Botox, reconstructive surgery, cosmetic surgery, or injectable fillers/dermal fillers, we must understand their unique cosmetic concerns. Many publications on cosmetic procedures refer to Westerners, but we must take note that Asian patients differ when it comes to their preferences, structural facial anatomy, and degrees of aging.

Many Asian patients are pursuing cosmetic treatments. These treatments shouldn’t be viewed as an attempt to change their appearance to fit Western standards, but rather an enhancement of their Asian ethnic features.

Here are some notable differences between Asian and Caucasian skin and face:

Face

  • Asian patients usually have a wider and shorter face. Their faces may look flatter with less brow, nose, and chin projection.
  • Asians also usually have a greater mandibular width which contributes to a square lower face and a retruded chin.
  • The Asian nose tends to be flatter with a wider base and less tip projection.
  • Asians can have greater infraorbital volume and fuller lips. The ratio of their upper and lower lip is around 1:1.2, while the ratio for Caucasians is around 1:1.6.

Skin

  • Asian skin has a greater dermal thickness, collagen content, and melanin when compared to Caucasians.
  • Asian wrinkles normally manifest one to two decades later than in Caucasians of the same age.
  • Asians tend to have denser fat which can reduce midfacial sagging for longer.
  • Other possible causes for reduced skin aging in Asian patients are diets that are high in antioxidants, lessened smoking rates, and sociocultural factors such as skincare practices.

It’s essential to know the differences between Asian and Caucasian face and skin because it can help doctors formulate the best possible cosmetic treatment plan. Since Asians usually have a wider face with shorter vertical height and a flatter projection, many of them wish to have an oval facial shape.

What Other Cosmetic Procedures Can I Get if I Have Asian Eyes?

Beautiful smiling woman with clean skin, natural make-up

Having Asian eyes doesn’t mean your cosmetic options are limited. Asian eyelid surgery is defined as any surgery applied to the Asian eyelid/eye area. Here are other cosmetic procedures you can get for your Asian eye:

Asian Blepharoplasty/Asian Double Eyelid Surgery/Asian Eyelid Lift

Around 50% of those of East Asian descent have a skin fold or pretarsal crease above the eyelashes (You may see this as an eyelid fold). If you don’t have this crease, you may notice that much of your eye area is covered by skin (excess eyelid skin/excess skin), thus causing your eyes to look small. Your eyelashes that point downward may even poke into your eyes.

If that’s the case, the solution could be the Asian eyelid lift (also known as blepharoplasty or double eyelid surgery). It removes fat and skin and places stitches to make an additional upper crease in the eyelids. That way, a double eyelid is made.

Asian Rhinoplasty

Asian rhinoplasty refers to a set of rhinoplasty techniques usually requested among the Asian population. Rhinoplasty on Asians and rhinoplasty on Caucasians have the same goal: to build a natural-looking structure blending with the face. While the goal is the same, it’s important to understand that Asians normally require augmentation of the nose, while Caucasians normally require reduction.

Lower Eyelid Surgery

Lower eyelid surgery fixes issues with eye bags, loose skin, and dark circles. However, since eye sagging may occur due to fat deposition, simply removing the fat won’t solve the problem. The surgeon must examine if the facial bone structures underneath the lower eyelid are normal. The surgeon must also determine if the patient requires a fat removal or fat reposition.

Ptosis Repair

Ptosis is an eyelid condition associated with weakness in the eye-elevating muscle. Those with ptosis normally have droopy eyelids and often look sleepy and tired. Droopy eyelids can limit or deter the amount of color aspect shown in the eyes, which is why those who suffer from this condition appear tired all the time.

Epicanthoplasty

An epicanthoplasty aims to release (or partially release) an epicanthal fold. The epicanthal or Mongolian fold is the skin seen on the inner corner of the eyes of some Asian patients. It’s important to note, however, that epicanthoplasty isn’t always executed for its high chance of scarring after surgery.

How Does Botox Near the Eyes Work?

Asian woman is applying cream to her face.

Now that we understand cosmetic procedures for Asian patients, let’s dive into how Botox works in general, specifically near the eyes.

Under the Eyes

Botox is essentially an effective treatment for wrinkles such as crow’s feet, forehead lines, and frown lines. However, even though Botox treatment has been used for these wrinkles since the late 1980s, not enough research has been done to declare Botox as effective for wrinkles and bags under the eyes. Botox injection under the eyes is not yet approved by the FDA.

Around the Eyes

Botox around the eyes is used to soften the appearance of crow’s feet and “11” lines. It also works by correcting asymmetric eyelids or eyebrows. The presence of fine lines or crow’s feet at the outer corners of the eyes, even when you’re not smiling, is often related to aging.

Between the Eyes

Glabella lines and frown lines are the wrinkles that appear between the eyebrows, giving you a tired and tensed look. Botox can smooth these frown lines and result in a more relaxed appearance.

Why Do People Get Botox Near the Eyes?

The obvious reason for getting Botox near the eyes would be for cosmetic purposes, but Botox can treat certain medical conditions as well, such as:

  • Strabismus or lazy eye: This is an imbalance in strength in the muscles keeping the eyes focused. This condition can be caused by nerve damage around the eyeball or leading from the eye to the brain. Symptoms of this condition include impaired vision in one eye, double vision, eye strain, and lower depth perception. Botox is normally one of the last approaches to treating strabismus.
  • Blepharospasm or eye twitching: Muscles near the eyelid can sometimes twitch involuntarily, also known as myokymia. It can involve the lower lid, upper lid, or both. While most only experience this once in a while, for others, they can become chronic and impact vision.
  • Eye dryness or excessive tearing: Botox injections can help if there’s watering of the eyes through tear ducts. The treatment works by widening the area, making blockages move out or tears to move around them.
  • Migraine: If you’re dealing with chronic migraine headaches, you may also be having trouble with light sensitivity and flashes of light. Botox can help treat your symptoms if you’re experiencing migraine headaches for 15 days or more in one month.

Can I Treat Crow’s Feet With Botox?

A lot of inevitable things come with age, and unfortunately, crow’s feet are one of them. Crow’s feet are the wrinkles you see in the corner of your eyes, and while no one really likes any kind of wrinkle, crows feet are the kind of wrinkle that looks more pronounced on the skin — making us hate them even more. Some of the causes of crow’s feet are aging and UV exposure, but it can actually occur at any age. But don’t fret — a cosmetic treatment like Botox has been around to help reduce facial wrinkles. A Botox treatment has helped many patients deal with fine lines and dynamic wrinkles over the years.

So can Botox around eyes treat crow’s feet? Just like any other wrinkles on your face, crow’s feet can definitely be treated by Botox. Botox is a better option for crow's feet treatment compared to cosmetic surgery because it’s quick and non-invasive.

What Are Crow’s Feet and How Do They Occur?

We know that crow’s feet are the wrinkles in the corners of your eyes and that aging and UV exposure are some of the main causes, but there are many other things about crow’s feet that we need to know for us to better understand what we’re dealing with.

Crow’s feet are also called laugh lines and character lines. When it comes to more technical names, they’re commonly called Duchenne markers, orbicularis oculi contractions, and lateral canthal lines.

The skin on our face normally stretches due to elasticity. This means that it goes back to its original form when pulled or compressed. However, due to aging, our skin loses this elasticity. This causes wrinkles to form as our bodies’ production of collagen and elastin lessens as we get older. More than this, muscle contractions caused by squinting or frowning can make our skin fold and furrow, leading to facial lines such as crow's feet lines.

UV exposure and aging may be the main causes of crow’s feet, but it can occur at any age — even in your mid-twenties. These annoying lines near the eye area can appear earlier in life even though other wrinkles show up later on because of a thin skin layer and lack of oil glands surrounding your eyes.

Crow’s feet may be a sign that you’ve had good laughs and smiles in your lifetime, but they can, unfortunately, affect your self-confidence — especially when you only see these eye wrinkles stretching from the eye area to your temples. But don’t worry — Botox can be used to fight the wrinkles in your face, including glabella lines/glabellar lines, marionette lines, forehead wrinkles, and frown lines.

How Does Botox for Crow’s Feet Work?

Botox is a quick treatment that works beneath the skin’s surface. It works by temporarily reducing underlying muscle activity that causes issues like crow’s feet, forehead line, and smile lines. When Botox injection is used for crow’s feet, the injections relax the muscles surrounding your eyes, so your skin smooths out.

The Botox injectables are made from botulinum toxin type A. Botulinum toxin type A is produced by the same bacterium responsible for botulism. When administered in very small doses, it’s a safe and effective treatment for facial wrinkles.

The key difference between Botox for crow’s feet and Botox for deeper lines in other areas of your face is the number of units needed for each area. While each procedure is customized to each patient, the smaller the treatment area, the fewer units are needed.

A Botox cosmetic procedure is actually pretty fast and straightforward, so don’t worry about it. Before your treatment, you’ll have a consultation to make sure that you’re a proper candidate for Botox for crow’s feet. You’ll also be asked about which areas you’d like to target. In the case of crow’s feet, the skin around the corner of your eyes will be the injection site. You have the option to treat a single area or more than one area depending on the depth of your wrinkles and the condition of your skin.

When it’s time for the treatment, a very fine needle will be used to inject a carefully controlled stream of Botox. The practitioner will repeat the procedure until the treatment has covered all the areas you wish to address.

After the treatment, you may feel that your skin is a bit flushed, and the area surrounding the entry point is a bit swollen. If your skin is inflamed, apply ice to the area. Just be sure that it’s wrapped in cloth so there won’t be any direct contact with the skin. Side effects should be minor and should subside within 2 days.

If you’re taking medication or herbal supplements, don’t forget to inform your doctor. They may recommend that you temporarily stop taking them before your procedure to reduce the chances of side effects.

What Are the Benefits of Getting Botox for Crow’s Feet?

Smiling lady lying with her eyes closed during the Botox injection

Crow’s feet are usually the first visible sign of aging. They tend to develop before other wrinkles on the face due to the delicacy of the skin around the eyes as well as how often we use the muscles in this area. When we do facial expressions, our facial muscles, including our eyes, move.

Luckily, a cosmetic injection such as Botox provides numerous benefits for those who want to deal with their facial wrinkles:

  • It’s a non-surgical procedure: A lot of potential patients are hesitant about getting a surgical procedure because of the risks of invasive treatments. Botox, however, is a preferable alternative as it provides results without the risks that surgery provides.
  • It’s a simple process: A Botox treatment usually takes only 15 to 30 minutes. An ultra-fine needle will be used to inject a tiny amount of Botox into the areas of the skin that you want to address, and after that, you won’t have to worry about needing to take a day off.
  • Botox provides targeted treatment: Botox treatments can target specific areas of the skin that are susceptible to wrinkles and lines. For crow’s feet, you can simply address that actual area with Botox treatment — and it won’t be a problem even if the rest of your face is youthful and smooth.
  • Botox results won’t last forever: If you’re worried about committing to a treatment that may not match the results you want, don’t worry: Botox only has temporary results. Many people are worried about getting a cosmetic treatment because the results may not be what they wanted, but with Botox, the results only last for 4 to 6 months. So if for whatever reason, you’re not satisfied with how it turned out, you’re comforted by the fact that the effects will soon fade.
  • Botox gives natural-looking results: Botox results will definitely not make you look or feel fake. A Botox treatment can give you natural-looking results that you’ll feel confident and comfortable in.

How Much Does It Cost?

When it comes to Botox around eyes or crow’s feet, remember to prepare for long-term costs. Most healthcare providers will charge you on the number of Botox units and not the actual visit.

An expert Botox injector would charge Botox by the area and by the unit. The price per Botox unit varies from one location to another, so the price ranges from $9 to $20. The number of units needed to reduce and prevent fine lines and wrinkles around the eyes is around 10 units, and eye each is likely to receive 5 units.

Therefore, when you calculate the total cost of an injection around your eyes, multiply the number of units and the total per unit (e.g., Multiply 10 units by 20 dollars = 200 dollars). Remember that the cost of Botox for the eye area always varies from one location to another depending on the location, the area to be treated, the person performing the treatment, and the reputation of the doctors and clinics.

Another thing to remember is that insurance doesn’t cover Botox for crow’s feet because it’s an elective cosmetic treatment, not a medical treatment.

What Should I Know About Recovery and Side Effects?

The length of recovery for Botox is short as compared to other types of cosmetic procedures. You’re also able to go home right after the treatment. You can expect to see the difference after around 3 days. After 2 weeks, you should already see the full effects, and you should see that the wrinkles are significantly less prominent when you smile. Just remember that Botox isn’t a permanent solution, and the results will last around 4 to 6 months. When the effects start to fade, you may undergo repeat treatment.

You don’t have to worry about its safety as well. Botox has been used for over a century, and in the last decade, it has become widely popular. When Botox is administered by trained and experienced professionals, there’s an extremely low risk of complications.

However, while Botox is extremely safe, side effects are still possible. When you leave your healthcare provider’s office, you may notice some redness and swelling around your eyes, as well as small bruises. These side effects may occur in the areas where your provider injected the Botox in the muscles around your eyes, but there shouldn’t be any widespread inflammation.

Other side effects could also be:

If you experience any of the following rare side effects, seek medical help immediately:

  • Difficulty breathing
  • Loss of speech or vision
  • Difficulty swallowing food and drinks
  • Bladder control problems
  • Muscle weakness (starting in the face and spreads to the body)

What Are Other Ways to Treat Crow’s Feet?

Shot of an attractive young woman looking at herself in the bathroom

Aside from Botox, other treatments can also be used to treat crow’s feet:

1. Topical Creams

Prescription and over-the-counter topical creams or eye cream can help beat fine lines and wrinkles. Tretinoin (Retin-A) is commonly used to fight the signs of aging because it promotes the production of new skin. Another reason why we love eye cream is that it helps reduce eye bags and brighten dark circles.

2. Chemical Peel

A chemical peel is done through a chemical solution on the face, thus removing the outer layer of the skin and revealing new and smoother skin. The three different types of chemical peels are superficial peels, medium-depth peels, and deep peels.

3. Dermal Filler

These are injected directly into the crow’s feet with a small needle. Take note that the various fillers have slightly different components, so be sure to discuss them with your healthcare provider.

4. Laser Treatment

Ablative laser resurfacing works by removing the upper layers of skin and revealing newer skin. This procedure works well for crow’s feet because it heats up several layers of skin, thus promoting collagen production.

5. Hyaluronic Acid

Hyaluronic acid is most useful for treating crow’s feet when it’s used together with vitamin C or another absorbable serum that can help stimulate collagen growth in the skin tissue.

Can I Get Botox Between My Eyes?

Botox around the eyes has become a popular treatment for those who want to smooth out wrinkles but don’t want to undergo cosmetic surgery. Botox treatment works by blocking one’s nerve impulses that cause facial muscles to contract. When muscles beneath the skin don’t contract, wrinkles are minimized or eliminated entirely. Botox near or around the eyes is used to soften the appearance of crow's feet and the "11" lines on the forehead.

So can you get Botox between your eyes? You most definitely can. You can get rid of glabellar lines and frown lines with Botox. It’s a trusted cosmetic procedure that has made a name for itself in the industry for being safe, effective, and minimally invasive.

Is It Possible to Get Botox Between Eyes?

Dynamic wrinkles and static wrinkles can get pretty annoying, and there are times when we just want to solve the problem with Botox. But can we get Botox between our eyes? The simple answer is yes. Botox cosmetic relaxes and smooths the appearance of facial wrinkles. It temporarily paralyzes the muscles in your face through an active ingredient called botulinum toxin type A, and yes, Botox can be injected into the forehead between the eyes.

A Botox injection into the forehead can help smooth horizontal forehead lines and vertical wrinkles between your eyes. These injections work by relaxing the muscles that cause wrinkles to form. They essentially minimize the appearance of vertical frown lines and that annoying horizontal forehead wrinkle.

To be clear, though, when you talk about wrinkles between the eyes, you could actually be talking about two things: glabellar lines and frown lines — both of which can be treated with Botox.

Glabellar lines are simply defined as the lines on your forehead. While they only appear when you make a certain facial expression, as you age, they can become permanent facial lines on your forehead.

Frown lines are lines between the eyes and adjacent to the eyebrows. They’re vertical lines that usually stretch from above the side of your nose to above your eyebrows.

Many people prefer Botox as a cosmetic treatment over surgery when dealing with forehead lines because of its proven track record when it comes to safety. A Botox cosmetic treatment is one of the oldest non-surgical cosmetic treatments out there. A lot of people have tried it and vouched for its effectiveness.

Another reason why Botox is the easier choice is that it’s minimally invasive. With Botox, patients won’t have to prepare for surgery or be under anesthesia for hours. And as much as we love our trusted plastic surgeon, we just don’t want to go through that inconvenience. There are also very few side effects from the Botox cosmetic injection process.

What Are Glabellar Lines and Frown Lines?

Glabellar Lines vs. Frown Lines

Glabellar lines and frown lines are frequently used interchangeably when talking about the lines above the nose and around the forehead. While they both refer to similar lines in the same area, they have different meanings.

Glabellar lines appear in the skin over your forehead — between and above the eyebrows and right above the nose — also called the glabella. When you talk, yawn, or make a facial expression, the glabella is the skin that becomes affected by the muscle movement beneath the surface. These lines are located above the eyebrows on the forehead and run horizontally from one eyebrow to the other. On the other hand, frown lines can be found adjacent to the eyebrows. They’re vertical lines that go from above the side of the nose to right above the eyebrows.

These two kinds of wrinkles are commonly called emotional wrinkles because one of their most common causes is how our faces wrinkle when we show emotions. Our skin becomes looser as we age because the collagen bonds in the face become weaker. When one reaches a certain age, facial movements around the face can begin to permanently affect the shape of the skin.

Botox for Glabellar Lines

Botox treatment is made from Clostridium Botulinum. Botox suppresses the muscles together, thus smoothing the wrinkles and preventing future lines from forming. It temporarily paralyzes the facial muscles and the muscles around the eyebrows with botulinum toxin A. It’s then injected into the injection site, thus freezing the muscles in place. A dermatologist or Botox injector would typically use 20 units of Botox when treating glabellar lines.

Botox for Frown Lines

Botox for frown lines is an awesome way to lessen the look of tension. Botox treatments are used to relax the muscles in the face that cause fine lines and wrinkles, thus preventing the further deepening of such lines. Botox for frown lines is a simple 10-minute cosmetic injection procedure with some injections into the muscles you want to treat.

How Much Botox Is Allowed on the Forehead?

A Botox unit is defined as the measurement of the amount of Botox that’s injected into the face or body. The number of Botox units will vary, but it essentially comes in dosages between 50 and 100 units per vial. According to some practitioners, they inject an average of 10 to 30 units into the forehead. The manufacturer of Botox Cosmetic (Allergan) suggests 4 units each in 5 sites on the forehead (totaling 20).

You can expect the practitioner to start with a low-unit dosage in each injection in the beginning. They’ll give you 1 to 2 weeks to see how it works for you, then you may receive a few additional units. Your practitioner will then be able to decipher how many units you need for future visits.

Botox injections are usually spaced approximately 3 to 4 months apart. You may also find that you need to come back to your practitioner 2 to 3 months after the first treatment.

How Much Does It Cost?

Just like the number of Botox units, the Botox cost will vary. The cost of forehead Botox essentially varies by practice and location. Since the number of injections or units also depends on the patient, it can affect the final price. For Botox injections that cover your forehead, you can expect to pay a range of $350 to $500.

Other sources say that each Botox unit costs around $10 to $15, so if you receive up to 20 units in your forehead, you could be paying around $200 to $300 to treat horizontal forehead lines. Forehead injections and glabellar line injections usually go hand in hand, so you may expect your treatment to reach around $800 for both areas.

How Long Does It Last?

After you receive the injections, you may notice that your muscles gradually freeze up in a day or two. After a week, full results can already appear. The Botox treatment’s line-smoothing effects can last 3 to 4 months before they slowly wear off. These 3 to 4 months are also when your forehead wrinkles have fully relaxed. This is the same duration for other treated areas as well.

If you’re loving the results of your Botox treatment, remember that the only way to maintain its appearance is to keep getting the injections.

What Other Areas on My Face Can Get Botox?

By now, you probably already know that many other parts of your face can get Botox. While an experienced practitioner can work their magic on your glabellar and frown lines, they can do the same for other areas as well.

1. Eyebrows or Hooded Eyes

As we age, our eyebrows tend to drop and give the eyelid a hooded look, causing horizontal folds in the surrounding skin. The treatment used to correct hooded eyes is called a chemical brow lift or Botox facelift. This Botox brow lift technique is done through injections in certain areas on the upper face to open up the eye area and lift your droopy eyelid.

2. Crow’s Feet

Crow’s feet are the wrinkles seen at the outer corners of the eyes. These wrinkles often come as we age.

3. Surprise Lines

Surprise lines or forehead lines are those that appear on your forehead when you raise your eyebrows. They become more evident as you age. If you have deeper wrinkles, your practitioner may recommend a combination of Botox and filler injections.

4. Bunny Lines

Bunny lines are the creases that you see when your nose wrinkles up. Botox injections at either side of the nose can help reduce the appearance of these lines.

5. Under the Eyes

Botox can smooth fine creases underneath the eyes, but this must be done very carefully. The injected muscle is the same one that partially controls the lower eyelid, so it may lead to eye problems, specifically an eyelid droop, when done incorrectly. Always make sure that you’re in the hands of an experienced practitioner.

6. Gummy Smile

A gummy smile can be defined as an excessive gingival display. While a lot of dentists offer procedures to treat this, many of which are surgical. Botox can relax the muscles on the face that cause the gummy smile, and the lips can cover up the gums.

7. Smoker’s Lines

Smoker’s lines are fine lines around the mouth that are more evident either with aging or smoking — hence the name. Botox can help turn the corners of the mouth up.

8. Marionette Lines

Marionette lines are the lines that run vertically between the mouth and chin. They can also cause sagging skin in the lower half of your face. Botox treatment for these lines works best when you’re just beginning to develop them. A dermal filler, which helps plump your skin with either poly-L-lactic or hyaluronic acid, can also help treat marionette lines in their earlier stages.

What Should I Know Before Getting a Botox Treatment?

More often than not, Botox patients don’t regret their treatment — but they still wish they knew these quick tips before getting Botox.

  • Botox is temporary — Sure Botox is a great and effective solution, but keep in mind that it’s not a permanent thing. The usual duration of Botox for glabella lines and the forehead, as we’ve mentioned, is around 3 to 4 months.
  • It’s not 100% painless — Don’t expect your Botox treatment to be totally painless. Prepare yourself with the mindset that multiple injections are a little more intense than a quick mosquito bite pinprick.
  • Some activities are forbidden right after treatment — Certain activities aren’t recommended right after a Botox treatment. For the next few hours or so, don’t exercise, lie down, or take any blood-thinning medications.
